UPPER BAILEY: *** A 2
hour or more, day walk with close views of Mt Rolleston, pleasant bush
and good value.
UPPER OTIRA VALLEY: **
Delightful walk along the river, tussock, flax and plenty of flowers
leads to the upper basin.
Mt. AICKEN: ** Long and
steep-ish walk through beech, tussock and rubble to 1860m. Great views
of Rolleston and neighbours, Blimmit basin, Franklin, but little flora.
|
TEMPLE BASIN: *** Up to
the ski lodges on an easy track through scrub and herb fields. Abundant
flora and superb views of Mt. Rolleston. A round trip up tussock on
south of Temple col gives good views of Mt. Franklin, lake Mavis and
Mingha valley.

AVALANCHE PEAK: Up,
then down Crow Valley is a more strenuous but more interesting way to
get to Carrington Hut than the river bed. A side trip up to Barker Hut
or up to Harman Pass is worth the effort. Not for beginners, needs a
little navigation. |
