Beautiful
scenery passed King's Hut when the Wangapeka flows into a narrow gorge
twenty meters below the benched track. Stone hut has wood stove and
veranda. Weka, whio and robins are the close neighbours. A well marked
track follows Stone creek through a pleasant mossy mixed forest. The
imposing pyramid of Mt. Luna gives unlimited views at the 1578 m top. But
there is still a long walk on the ridge, sharp and intimidating at places,
followed by the descent through the dry beech forest (7 h). From Kiwi
saddle hut the benched track goes back to the Wangapeka valley (6 h).
Another option would be over Mt. Patriarch ridge and the rough Gibbs track
(8 h) or further to John Reid hut and Chummies track. |

Old Cecil King built and lived
in this hut as a gold prospector from 1935 until his death in 1982. The
hut is maintained by his family and volunteers as a testimony to a fast disappearing
way of life. |
