In the heart of the Southern Alps, featuring rugged mountains,
forests, alpine vegetation and kea (alpine parrots). Tramping, climbing,
skiing, hunting, short walks, camping. A scenic highway and railway
travel through the park.
Rivers are generally not bridged in this often rugged country. Do not
expect many sign posted benched tracks here. Apart from the day walks,
experience and navigation skills are strongly recommended to discover
some of the best wilderness in the country.
