Remote and spectacular alpine wilderness accessible from
Wanaka, Queenstown or the Haast Pass, with mountains, glaciers, hanging
valleys and lakes. World Heritage Area.
Contains well-known tramping tracks, including the Routeburn, Rees-Dart
and Greenstone-Caples tracks. Wilderness mountaineering, hunting,
fishing, guided walks. Outstanding scenery along the Haast Pass Highway.
There is plenty to discover in this area in addition to the most
popular tracks in the country. The main accesses are from Makarora,
Wanaka and Glenorchy. It is adjacent to Fjordland National Park, many
tracks connect one to the other.
