Nelson Lakes National Park

Area: 102,000 hectares

A compact alpine park accessible from Nelson or the West Coast, with beech forests, rivers and glacial lakes (Rotoiti and Rotoroa). Year-round scenic walks, tramping, mountaineering, ski mountaineering, ice skating, hunting, fishing, sailing and canoeing.

This relatively small park offers one the best enjoyment/effort ratio, from day walks to 10 day circuits or more. The Travers valley is a delight for the keen tramper. Most rivers are bridged, tracks are well marked and superbly maintained. Long circuits can take you over Travers saddle to the Sabine valley, and from there to the more remote d'Urville valley via Moss pass.
