Westland/Cook National Park

Area: 117,000 hectares and 70,000 hectares

Extends from the highest peaks of the Southern Alps to a wild remote coastline, glaciers, scenic lakes and dense rainforest. Remains of old gold mining towns along the coast. World Heritage Area. Easy access to the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, forest and coastal walks. Mountaineering, ski touring, hunting and fishing. Guided tours of the glaciers, scenic drives and flights.

These two parks are rather a place for mountaineers and climbers. Nevertheless, both sides of the highest part of the main divide offers exhilarating scenery only a few hours walk on steep tracks.
